Who is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?
An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) is a healthcare provider that has completed a 4-year dentistry degree followed by a post-graduate hospital-based surgical residency training program. This postgraduate training includes rotations in anesthesiology and internal medicine, general surgery, trauma, plastic surgery, and ear, nose, and throat surgery. Some OMFS may participate in extra training as well. With specialized knowledge in pain control and advanced training in anesthesia, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon is able to provide quality care with maximum patient comfort and safety in the office setting. While oral and maxillofacial surgeons are best known for extracting wisdom teeth, we do that and much more, everything from reconstructing faces shattered by trauma to surgically correcting misaligned jaws to cancer surgery of the face and neck.
