Who is Arthur Miller?
Arthur Miller was an American playwright, best known for his plays Death of a Salesman and The Crucible, and his high-profile private life. He was born in 1915, in New York City, and died in 2005 at the age of 89. Over the course of his long career he won numerous awards, and is considered by many to be one of the greatest playwrights in American history. Arthur Miller was born to upper-middle class Jewish parents before the outbreak of the first World War. On the advent of the Great Depression, when he was only fourteen years old, his family’s business failed, and the family was forced to reduce the cost of their lifestyle drastically, settling into a more comfortably middle-class life. With these limited means, Miller was forced to work a number of simple jobs to earn money to pay college tuition, and at that time he read Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, which inspired him to become a writer.
