Christian Dior was one of the most influential fashion designers in the world. During his career, he was responsible for the majority of French fashion design exports worldwide. Dior was born 21 January, 1905 in the seaside town of Granville in Normandy, France. Christian Dior’s family was wealthy and he was raised with four other siblings in a home with ocean views. When Christian was about five years old, the family moved to Paris, France, but still returned to the Normandy coast for summer vacations. Christian studied political science to please his parents even though he wanted to become an architect. Although Christian Dior’s parents had hoped their son would become a diplomat, his father did finance Christian’s opening of an art gallery in 1928. The condition though was that the family name was not to be placed anywhere on the door. The art gallery was a success and it showcased the works of artists such as Pablo Picasso. Christian Dior was born in Granuille in France in 1905 and died in 1957. He studied political science in Paris and made music. He ran an art gallery and travelled. In 1935 he lived in Paris and sold fashion sketches to newspapers. In 1938 he joined Robert Pig net and in 1942 he moved to Lelong, where he worked alongside Balamain. Acceding to his parents’ wishes, Dior attended the cole des Sciences Politiques from 1920 to 1925. The family, whose fortune was derived from the manufacture of fertilizer, had hopes he would become a diplomat, but Dior only wished to be involved in the arts, mostly fashion, but sketching as well. To make money, he sold his fashion sketches on the streets for about 10 cents each. After leaving school he received money from his father so that in 1928 he could open a small art gallery, where he sold art by the likes of Pablo Picasso and Max Jacob.
