Who is discussing the unusual careers on Navajo Reservations with other indians?
Doris Denike, 88, lived with the Navajo Indians for 40 years, serving as a grade school teacher at the Navajo Gospel Mission. After hearing a missionary presentation at a church in Detroit, where she was living in 1940 post graduation from CHS, Denike knew that she had to go to Arizona and teach in the mission school. She prepared herself by attending a three-year Bible College and then earned a four-year university teaching degree. In 1953, she began teaching – and returned home to Cadillac in 1993. The Dineh (Navajo) Nation: The Dineh Tribe (Navajo) is the largest Native American tribal group in North America and has approximately 200,000 members. Today its 16-million acre reservation, the largest in the U.S., includes parts of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. The Navajo retain a strong cultural identity, but their language is still used by a majority of the people, with English being an accepted second language. Sources:
