Who is Eric Liddell and why he was important?
Eric Liddell was the hero of the film “Chariots of Fire”, which is what brought him to the world’s attention. He was a very gifted Olympic runner of the 1930’s who was also a devout Christian and who refused to run in one of his races in the Paris Olympics because the qualifying heats were on a Sunday, when he was due to speak in the Scottish Church in Paris. However, he found himself coming first in the race which wasn’t his brightest hope and felt that God had blessed his faithfulness and integrity and refusal to compromise his beliefs. He became a missionary in China and was interned by the Japanese. He did not survive. He has inspired many by his courage and his steadfastness. Read more about him here.
