Internal combustion engines that use petrol, by the very nature of the molecular structure of the hydrocarbons, the temperture of the reaction, and the composition of our atmosphere,(~21% oxygen) cannot be made to not produce oxides of nitrogen,(78% of our atmosphere). Both the technology and the fuel have improved over the years in an attempt to limit the amount of pollutants produced, but they will never be completely eliminated while we use octane or similar hydrocarbons as fuel; and, with the industrial development of China and India, pollution will inevitiblly get worse.If we continue to use internal combustion engines, the only known fuels,(at this time), which produce little or no pollution are hydrogen and methane.It is possible to convert petroleum into methane,
