Who is Lorraine Heggessey?
Lorraine Heggessey became Controller of BBC One in November 2000, the first woman to hold the position. Graduating from Durham University, Lorraine worked on local newspapers before joining the BBC in 1979 as a News trainee. Since then, she’s been a Producer on Panorama, an Editor of QED, and Executive Producer of both The Human Body and Animal Hospital. With Ken Loach directing, Lorraine produced and reported a Dispatches on the press treatment of Arthur Scargill, during which she famously turned the tables on Roger Cook by doorstepping him. For the BBC series The Underworld, she secured the first interview with Mad Frankie Fraser, one of Britain’s most notorious criminals. In October 1997 Lorraine took up the post of Head of BBC Children’s, where she revitalized the children’s department, launching 17 new shows before moving to her current position. A supporter of Doctor Who for many years, Lorraine was delighted to bring back the show after patiently waiting to see how the proposed
