Louis Tiffany is the man who captured the artistic spirit of what is fondly referred to as the gilded age. His career went from the 1870s to the mid 1920s encompassing more than half a century. He was a man who experimented with new ideas and aesthetic ideals and he had a multitude of talents from painter to architect to interior designer. His studio encompassed glassmakers, modelers, mosaic artists, artists, metal workers, textile workers, potters, and wood carvers. He was a man of continuous design which involved color, texture, and pattern to present a finished expression utilizing light. Tiffany had a life long fascination with light which is what led to his innovation of stained glass and new ways to use electric lighting with design. Louis Comfort Tiffany was an American stained glass artist and jewelry designer during the turn of the 20th century. Though he is best known for his stained glass, Lewis Comfort Tiffany also designed blown glass, ceramic, and metal works. The Tiffany lamp, a desk lamp with a stained glass shade made popular by Louis Comfort Tiffany, is one of the best known examples of the Art Nouveau style and continues to be frequently copied. Louis Comfort Tiffany was born in New York City on 18 February 1848. His parents were Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of jewelry and silverware store Tiffany and Company, and Harriet Olivia Avery Young. Louis Comfort Tiffany attended the Eagleswood Military Academy in New Jersey before devoting himself to the study of art.
