He was born in India then British territory I believe he was educated in Britain, possibly at Oxford. He worked as a lawyer in South Africa, then a British territory for a time. When he was young he considered himself “British” but when he returned to his parents’ native India, he found the way the British treated his people was terrible. There is a very good movie “Gandhi” starring Ben Kingsley from the early 1980’s that tells a lot about him, there are also many written sources. He is best known for fighting for independence from Britain by ‘passive resistance’, nonviolent means to disrupt the British government. India became independent after WWII, I think in 1947 and he was assassinated either the same year or a year later. He was a Hindu, but once when asked about his religion, he said “I am Hindu, I am Buddhist, I am Christian, I am Muslim, I am Jewish” or something to that effect. He reportedly once said “I like your Christ, but don’t like your Christians.” since many Christians
