Who is responsible for investigating an automobile accident, traffic homicide, or other motor vehicle collision in the state of Florida?
In Florida, most motor vehicle collisions and traffic accidents are investigated by local law enforcement agencies. For example, a motor vehicle collision, or automobile crash, occurring within the limits of a Florida city will typically be investigated by that city’s police department. A motor vehicle collision, automobile crash, or other similar event happening outside city limits will typically be investigated by the county’s sheriff’s department. In some cases, particularly in those cases involving very serious personal injuries and/or wrongful death (vehicular homicide), a combination of law enforcement agencies will work together in the investigation. Especially in the case of wrongful death or vehicular homicide collisions, several law enforcement agencies as well as the Florida State Police will often work together to conduct the investigation. Often times as the result of this investigation by law enforcement, a traffic ticket or violation will be issued. In more serious cases
