By Thomas Hill Thursday, July 17th 1997, 2:02AM Steve Phillips, who yesterday became the Mets’ ninth GM, rocketed through the organization to become one of the youngest top executives in baseball at 34. He wasn’t even in the game seven years ago. Following a six-year minor-league career spent entirely with the Mets, Phillips was working for the Maritz Motivation Co. in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in 1990. Joe McIlvaine, then the Mets’ VP for baseball operations, called Phillips and offered him a position as a minor-league scouting assistant. McIlvaine had drafted Phillips in 1981 when McIlvaine was scouting director. “Joe used to tease me that he drafted me for the front office,” Phillips said. “I owe Joe a lot for where I am today.” Phillips served as Mets director of minor leagues from 1991 until he succeeded current Astros GM Gerry Hunsicker as Mets assistant GM in December 1995.

I never had any respect for Steve Phillips. He’s a worthless analyst. You can lump John Kruk in there as well. Both are biased.
