A career criminal who went on a carjacking and bank robbery spree after escaping law enforcement custody was captured today after he crashed his latest stolen car as police chased him in West Chicago, authorities said. Robert Maday, 39, of Elk Grove Village crashed the stolen Volkswagen Jetta he was driving two miles south of the intersection of North Avenue and Route 59, according to Bloomingdale police. “I couldn’t be happier,” Bloomingdale Police Chief Tim Goergen said. “I’m glad it’s over.” “Mr. Maday is in custody. He was involved in a chase, a pursuit, with West Chicago police who did a fine job spotting the vehicle,” he said. Maday’s spree prompted numerous area schools to be placed on lockdown this morning, including ones in Elgin School District U46 and Community Unit School District 300.
