Who pays the debts?
Just like community assets, community debts are determined by thy the date they were incurred. As a general rule debts incurred during the marriage are community debts and are divided accordingly. Usually a secured debt stays with the asset. For instance if the Mercedes has a $30,000 lien on it the person who is awarded the car will also be awarded the debt. If one party has a significantly higher income that person will usually take more debt and be awarded more assets.
