Who really invented chess?

Hello; I am happy with the Indians inventing Chess, but it could have just as well been the Chinese — I think there is a lot of controversy surrounding the actual place of origin. I like the Greek myth that it was Hephestus, the blacksmith of the Gods who made it for Mars so that he could woe the wood nymph Ciassa. Another fun idea is that chess was given to humanity by space aliens … as a gift, a blessing, and a curse. If/When we master chess — we prove ourselves worthy to join galactic society.
