Who was a better basketball player Earving “Magic” Johnson or Julius “Dr.J” Erving?
In all honestly, I think this is a toss up. Magic will be the popular answer, and while he was amazing, I’m not sure he was that much better than Dr. J. People forget that Magic had Kareem all those years, and that Abdul-Jabaar was The best center ever outside of Russell and Chamberlain. When Dr. J was in his prime (78-84) he dominated the league. No one could stop him, and he willed his team to 4 Finals appearances. He wasn’t the passer Magic was, but he was one of the best perimeter defenders of all-time (completely underrated defensive player because he was such a creative, effective offensive force — both he and Kobe have averaged 24 ppg for their career.) His career per 82-game numbers are 24.2 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 4.2 apg, 2.0 spg, 1.7 bpg Magic’s per 82-game numbers were 19.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 11.2 apg, 1.9 spg, 0.4 bpg I give Magic the slightest of edges over Dr. J, but I’d emphasize how much he benefited from Kareem, Worthy, Scott, and Riley’s presence.
