Who was Lou Hamel and what were his accomplishments as a golfer?
I know a lot about golf history, but I have never heard anything about Lou Hamel. I searched online for him, but all I could find were links to sites that sold golf clubs with his brand. My educated guess would be that Hamel played golf, maybe professionally. But he wasn’t good enough to make a living just playing, so he somehow got into the golf club manufacturing business. He must have started his own company, and that’s why your club says “Lou Hamel” on it. Just because his name is on the club doesn’t necessarily mean that he was a great golfer.
Yeah, Lou Hamel was a great golfer. I am sure that he has a lot of achievements, and it’s not a simple coincidence that the club is carrying his name. Lou Hamel lived in Ohio. He won many trophies playing golf and sat on the committee that formed the PGA. He was well known where he lived and the May Company in Ohio carried golf clubs with his name on them. There he worked as an in-house instructor and also instructed golf on the course.
