Elizabeth I was Queen of England when Shakespeare was born, and he lived most of his life during her reign, and wrote many of his best plays in her lifetime. She took an interest in the theatre, and several of Shakespeare's plays were performed at court, including Twelfth Night. Shakespeare is said to have written 'The Merry Wives of Windsor' because the Queen said she would like to see Falstaff in love.  more
