Memorial services were held Tuesday for former Nixon aide and Union-Tribune executive Herb Klein. The memorial was held on the flight deck of the USS Midway on San Diego Bay. Herbert G. Klein died July 2nd at age 91. He served as Richard Nixon’s ex-White House director of communications and a former editor for Copley Newspapers. Klein died after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla, family members told the Union-Tribune.

SAN DIEGO – Herbert G. Klein, former White House official and newspaper executive, was remembered Tuesday as a pioneering journalist, revered mentor, a devoted family man, a rabid football fan and a tireless advocate for San Diego. “His intentions were genuine and they were largely focused on the betterment of this city,” San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders told hundreds of friends, relatives and admirers gathered on the deck of the USS Midway Museum in remembrance of Klein. “And as we look around this city and we see huge projects that benefit San Diego, Herb Klein had a piece of every single one of those.” Klein enjoyed a seven-decade career in journalism and politics before retiring as editor in chief of Copley Newspapers in 2003. He died on July 2 at his La Jolla home at the age of 91.
