Time magazine originally had selected Mark McGwire as it’s Man of the Year in 1998, but ended up choosing Bill Clinton and Ken Starr. McGwire would have won had Clinton’s trial started at a later date. Time selects the man who had the largest impact on history that year. Professional wrestler Mick Foley (A.K.A. Cactus Jack, Dude Love, Mankind) led all candidates in online voting that year, but Time removed him weeks before the deadline, stating that Foley had not achieved enough to deserve the award.
