I am going to borrow from my answer to another question modified a bit): … Vlad III, or Vlad Tepes. Tepes means “Impaler”. “Dracula” means “Son of the Dragon”. “Dracul” was his father’s title. He was born in Nov. or Dec. of 1431, died Dec. of 1476. Vlad III was not a “Count” like the book “Dracula” portrayed him. His was a Prince (Voivode) of Transylvania, which is now part of Romania. He and his family fought the Ottoman Turks and he was given to the Turks by his father to keep the peace along with his brother Radu (this was commonly done back then). Rather than a guest, they put him in their dungeons and killed his family, burning Mircea (another brother) alive and burying his father alive. Of course they had to tell him this as he was under their tender mercies. He would watch the Turks impale their captors and threaten him with it daily. That is where he learned his “trade”.
