William Wilberforce, John Wesley and the Quakers were among the main opponents of the slave trade in Britain. Toussaint l’Ouverture rose in revolt against the slave trade in the French colony of St Domingo in the Caribbean. A number of the Founding Fathers of the United States (Washington, Madison, Hamilton, and Patrick Henry) came out against the slave trade, although Washington had held slaves of his own.
