Who were The Hype?

The Hype were: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, electric piano), Mick Ronson (lead guitar), Tony Visconti (bass guitar) and John Cambridge (drums). Their debut performance took place at The Roundhouse Spring Festival in Camden, London on Sunday 22nd February 1970 (billed as David Bowie). This performance is regarded as the ‘first-ever glam rock performance’ as the band dressed up in superhero costumes: David as ‘Rainbowman’, Ronson (‘Gangsterman’), Visconti (‘Hyperman’) and Cambridge (‘Cowboyman’). This performance was filmed and recorded and is currently in the vaults owned by MainMan. Also performing on the bill that day were: Bachdenkel, Groundhog and Caravan. Their second gig took place the following day at the Streatham Arms in London under the pseudonym of ‘Harry The Butcher’. They performed on the 28th February at the Basildon Arts Lab experimental music club at the Basildon Arts Centre in Essex. Billed as ‘David Bowie’s New Electric Band’ so new they haven’t got a name yet! Also on
