BROOKLYN, Mich. – Brian Vickers won a fuel-mileage gamble, holding off Jeff Gordon to win the Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway. It was Vickers’ first Sprint Cup victory since October of 2006, or 87 races. Vickers won the pole for this race and came in second in Saturday’s Nationwide event. Vickers took two tires, rather than four, on his last pit stop, which he credited with allowing him to stay up front in the Red Bull Toyota. Vickers and Jimmie Johnson were both up front late, when Johnson ran out of gas with about three laps left. With Johnson having to pit, it was just a matter of whether Vickers’ fuel would last over Gordon. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished third, leading a race for the first time since Talladega in late April.
