Why a seismic survey?
Victoria is at the threshold of a new energy future. The impacts of climate change and the introduction of carbon constraints will dramatically alter the ways in which we source and produce energy. The Victorian Government is committed to responding to climate change by helping to reduce Victoria’s carbon pollution levels. Carbon capture and storage (CCS), otherwise known as geosequestration, involves collecting the large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases released by power stations, then storing these emissions securely, in a liquid form, deep underground. The purpose of the seismic survey is to gather new geoscience information about potential geological carbon storage sites in the offshore Gippsland Basin. The data will be used to develop a sophisticated 3D geological model of the basin as part of the VicGCS initative, which will reduce some of the risks and uncertainties faced by companies exploring for geological carbon storage sites.
