They were not docile. However the Hindus were never fanatical about religion. There were many wars. Control of many parts went back and forth between Hindus. You seem to be reading the Marxist version of history. The largest Empire at the time the Brtish came to India were the Hindu Marathas and not the Muslim Mughals. The Mghals had been redced to nominal rulers. There were Hindu revolts, Sikh revolts and Muslim power was ever weakening. hindoos expect every one to behave one’s own fate-maker, unlike the abrahamic religions suggesting ‘master-slave’ concept; so if one rules, someone is to be ruled over; it will start with ruling over and end with ruining all over, which is hapening in cases of all nations of the world; hindoos are for self-realization, whatever be the cost; every dog has its day.
