Why are alloy wheels better than regular wheels on cars?

There are two reasons why alloy wheels are better than steel wheels. For most people it’s simply because they look better. But to be more technical, it’s because they reduce unsprung weight. Unsprung weight is any weight which is not being carried by the suspension. The less unsprung weight you have the better handling you’ll get. Also, a lighter wheel provides less rotational inertia which helps acceleration, braking, and handling. That’s why Porsche’s, Ferrari’s, etc. all use low weight alloy wheels. But for the majority of people they just think they look better.
