Why are bald eagles a threatened or endangered species?
Bald eagles became a threatened/endangered species after World War II because of the increase in use of pesticides and pollution. When eagles eat contaminated fish, their eggs often fail to hatch, or the eggshells break because they are so thin. Today, more than 50,000 bald eagles exist in North America, partly as a result of their federal protection status and changes in pesticide use.
