Why are different leadership styles important to understand? How do they relate to gender research?
It is important to distinguish between biological differences, gender differences, and leadership styles. At a basic level there are X and Y chromosomes. Then there is gender, which is a social construct; and, finally, there is what is referred to as a masculine or feminine leadership style. These leadership styles are based on how women and men are usually socialized, but a man or woman might use either a masculine or feminine style. It is important to be able to recognize these styles and understand which ones work in a particular situation. We also need to be aware of how other people might react when we employ a particular style. What happens when a woman acts in a “masculine” style? These reactions may be different across men and women and across various age groups. For all leaders, there is good evidence that we each have some preferred styles we use to approach things.
