Why are groceries so expensive in Seattle, Washington?
…that while Seattle’s groceries costs are about 10% more than the national average, they are lower than those in New York City and Boston. I checked one of the most popular grocery store chains in NYC (D’Agostino) and soy milk sells for $4.79/gal. In a popular grocery store in Yonkers (Shop Rite), a lower cost city near NYC, the price is $3.99. I don’t know Seattle grocery stores; but, I suggest doing a little comparison shopping if this food item is high volume and critical in your household. Silk Soy’s manufacturer seems to be in CO, so distribution costs can’t be a factor. I suspect the reason is that the Seattle economy is doing better than 99% of the rest of the US and the market will bear the price. Either that, or the Seattle municipal government has found a sneaky new way to tax its citizens… 🙂 COSTLIV Seattle New York United States
