Level Pre-A Main Concept: A spring is a place where water comes up out of the ground. There are also hot springs that make bubbles and steam. Hot springs are often near volcanoes. Some people like to take baths in hot springs. Picture Activity Discuss what a spring is and how a pool forms. Point out the bubbles and ask, “Where have you seen bubbles?” Ask students if they know how the bubbles got into the pool. Ask students if they have ever seen bubbles and steam in boiling water. Discuss what happens when water boils in a teakettle. Point out the volcano in the picture and ask what students know about volcanoes. Explain that nearby volcanoes often make the water hot.
