Indies are very important to all involved in the film. For directors it is a chance to show what they can do. Same for actors and even crews. Often an indie is done in short form. Shorts are less expensive to make and if you’re smart, and can tell a good story in 10 to 30 minutes, you have a shot at getting a job or funding to do a bigger film. Documentaries are almost always independently made. These are some of the best and most important films. Many times they shine a light where none would otherwise be shone.
