Why are many French against market economy?

… and the cultural chauvinist strain in broader French culture often focuses on multinational corporations which they view as threatening their way of life. The recent French elections suggest that market economy policies may be making a comeback. But when I lived there in the 70s most intellectuals fiercely defended the very strong social security network. Americans (in the abstract) are depicted as the invaders bent on neutering French culture. (Somehow American movies are granted an exception.) Even suggesting that America might have something to offer is controversial. I should say that socialism is much more than anti-Americanism; they certainly have their own barons of industry and commerce. It seems we have recently re-invented the Ugly American, at least in our foreign policy. As for national identity, when the French criticize us for confusing an individual’s value with wealth, and claim to have a healthier approach to enjoying life, it’s hard to disagree.
