So I think what Hosseini did in ATSS was that he created female characters that you empathize with and he then had these male characters who were hostile and chauvinistic. a lot of it is culture intertwined with religion and Hosseini criticizes the intertwining of the two; if you have a misogynistic culture that justifies misogyny (through incorrect verses and inappropriate contexts) through religion, it is seen as acceptable. But then you get to see what the society is like…where there is religion mixed with state mixed with culture which allows violence to perpetuate. Then you also have to remember that the environment created by women is primarily hostile there until the role of the matriarch exists.
