Why are salmon cans tapered?

Salmon cans are tapered to conserve space. When empty, the tapered cans are nested like paper coffee cups. Tapered cans require much less space to store and ship than cans that cannot be nested. Space is an important issue when shipping salmon cans to the remote locations of the salmon canneries, particularly in Alaska where everything must be shipped in by barge. more
