There are three reasons – Bounce quality, safety and expense. Bounce quality-- Springs are mainly important because they determine the quality of the bounce. And isn’t bounce why you are buying a trampoline in the first place? Sure, the mat or bed helps too, but it is the length of the spring that truly determines the quality of the bounce. Most manufacturers who produce economy type trampolines provide a minimal number of springs at 5-6 inches in length. Shorter springs don’t bend as easily, and the fewer you have, means less bending all around. Which leads us into safety…… Safety-- As mentioned above, shorter springs don’t bend easily, and the fewer you have, means less bending all around. Not only does this lack of bending cause a lesser quality bounce, but it may cause a rigid landing, leading to an injury. The lack of trampoline weight may also lead to safety concerns.
