Why are sugar alcohols used?
Sugar alcohols are used to replace table sugar because they have fewer calories, they do not promote tooth decay and they have a somewhat lesser effect on blood glucose. In addition, sugar alcohols add texture to foods, retain moisture better and prevent the usual browning that occurs when certain foods are heated. Used moderately, sugar alcohols provide a means for satisfying your sweet tooth without sacrificing at the scale. Despite their name, they cannot get you drunk; although there is a downside. Due to the slow and incomplete absorption from the small intestine into the blood, sugar alcohols can cause abdominal gas, bloating or diarrhea. These symptoms tend to occur only when taken in large amounts. Most people are able tolerate up to 20 grams of sugar alcohols without experiencing adverse effects. Bypass patients, however, must be especially cautious to consume no more than 12 grams per meal. All patients should check the labels of candy, gum or foods that contain sugar alcohol
