Why are Superhero Movies So Popular?
There’s a lot of aspects to this question. One would be the fact that there is a lot of material available. A lot of comics have been around for many years and inevitably this means that there are a lot of stories to adapt from.
However in recent years their increased popularity has also been down to the fact they have been taken more seriously. The original Iron Man film had a sly sense of satire that differentiated it from the more foreboding and dark Christopher Nolan Batman films.
Superheroes also have great psychological appeal for people watching them. The Hulk signifies all the pent up violence that people would love to unleash, while at the same evoking sympathy for his misunderstood nature. Superman is often an embodiment of ideals we would like to attain, while Batman seems to appeal to the darker side of people’s natures, the desire for revenge and to right past wrongs (something also reflected in the latest upcoming Marvel film The Avengers).
Some people are predicting that at some point there will be a saturation in the superhero market. However what this simply means is that some films will come that will not be as successful as hoped (as was the case with The Green Lantern).
In simple terms superhero movies are likely to still be with us for some time.
