They are not bad if the child takes the responsibility of rinsing and/or brushing away the sugars immediately after eating. The carbohydrates and sugars in candy, cake, cookies, sweet (pop) drinks, chewing gums allow the organisms in the mouth to produce acid on the tooth surface. It is the acid produced that softens the tooth structure resulting in cavities.
