The James Madison Museum predates Montpelier being opened to the public. By the time Montpelier opened to the public, the museum already had an impressive collection of Madison items. The donors of the items felt that the museum remained the proper place for the items as they help the museum provide an introduction to Montpelier and the Madisons.
