some types of stories become classics because 1] the contain elements that are timeless — same is true for movies, art etc. 2] styles of writing that are held in high regard also become acceptable throughout the ages 3] then there is the romanticism — some fictional characters become larger than life due to the way they are presented 4] keeping the fictional character going are tourism, more books on the subject, the physical place of 221 Baker street etc. the new movies, constant TV serials etc etc.
