Why Are Two of the Legends in Black Broadcasting Feuding?
Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder Robert Johnson was up in arms last week. The target of his ire was TV One and Radio One founder Cathy Hughes. The controversy centers on Johnson’s application to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to start a new urban television network. Via her son and TV One Chairman Alfred Liggins, Hughes has filed an opposition with the FCC in a bid to block Johnson’s plans. Johnson has responded by expressing “disappointment” in several media interviews and in a personal letter to Liggins. In the past, the billionaire has argued that his proposed urban network would not represent competition to TV One and BET (which he no longer owns). However, Hughes and Liggins apparently do not see it that way.
