Why are WIMPs weakly interacting?
Well, we think dark matter may be made of WIMPS pretty much by process of elimination. We know it doesn’t interact by electromagnetism, or else it would be luminous- we’d see it. We know it doesn’t interact via the strong force, because that would have observable consequences too. That leaves the weak force. It’s possible that dark matter consists of something that only interacts via gravity, but there are actually various reasons to think that dark matter has weak interactions. For instance, if it does, then about the right amount would have gotten formed after the Big Bang.
