Bamboo's durability, warmth, and beauty make it one of the most unique and desirable flooring materials. Though there are over one thousand different kinds of bamboo, a true grass, not all are suitable for use in flooring. The Mao Tzu variety is Sustainable Flooring's choice for material. Once the Mao Tzu poles reach about a year in age (40-50 ft. high), their main growth stops and they begin to mature. In years two through four, the bamboo internally hardens and matures. Then, in years five to eight, the Mao Tzu variety is harvested. Once harvested, the bamboo poles are set out to dry in the sun (the reason why some strips may be slightly lighter or darker than others is because of the sun drying - the longer the bamboo sits in the sun to dry, the lighter it becomes).
