Here are two of the most common Flooring Solutions presented to homeowners for having their stairs refaced while they are having flooring installed. Opt# 1-REPLACEMENT TREADS (Fig. A) Scope of Work: Cutting off nosing and installing 1 replacement tread over existing tread. Scotia or round molding is sometimes installed under tread separately to hide removed nosing. Results: Treads are 1 higher including the bottom step which results in a large step-up transition, the top step ends up being 1 shorter in most cases (if leaving carpet on second deck). Treads are usually only secured with face nails, which may result in loose treads down the road. Risers are painted over instead of covered. Most risers are constructed of pine which does not take paint as well as a uniformly flat surface resulting in raised grain and a visually less appealing finish. Treads are not template
