Britain’s promise to defend Poland, in case of attack, was specifically directed against Germany. Though Russia invaded Poland at the same time as Germany, and Russia was seen as “evil” for doing nasty things, Britain did not see herself as police-person of the world. Instead, Britain practiced realpolitik; in other words, policies that would directly benefit Britain. Germany was seen as a threat, against which Britain had to defend herself. Russia, the Brits predicted, would remain what it has always been (except for parts of the Cold War)—mostly agricultural, poor, and weak. Therefore Russia was ignored, and Germany had to be defended against.
