Why did Chinas ancient advanced culture fall behind Europes until recent times?
You could say that, starting in the late 1200s, with Genghis Khan and ending with his grandson Kublai Khan, China was invaded and ruled by the Mongolian hordes, warriors that descended upon China, Central Asia, the Middle East and even as far as India and Central Europe. The Mongolian Empire was the largest empire ever created in world history. Although short lived, there were lasting legacies that prevented China from advancing beyond its traditional borders. China’s next empire, the Ming Dynasty, began in 1368 and ended in 1644, followed by the Manchus and the Qing Dynasty from 1644 to 1912. Throughout all this time, from the 1200s to the 1900s, China was deeply affected by everything from outside invaders, to plague, to a devastating drug trade, to Imperial European colonialism, and this is why China’s culture did not expand like Europe’s.
