Why did Germany invade Soviet Union?

After the First World War and the Treaty of Versailles, the people of Germany lost faith in the ruling Republican government as it failed to maintain prestige and honor of Germany. This led to the growth of dictatorship under the rule of Hitler and his Nazi party. Apart from imperial designs, Hitler wanted to exterminate the Jews and the slavs, which constituted most of the Russian population and make Eastern Europe a land of pure Aryan race.
