Why Did Jesus Call Twelve Disciples?

Jesus called twelve disciples to symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel and that he was establishing a “new Israel”. They were men because culturally women would not have been understood to symbolize anything. From other parts of the gospel we see that Jesus was obviously not sexist.
