King Edward VIII liked to think of himself as a new age monarch. He was known as a playboy during his long tenure as Prince of Wales and grew up during the elaborate Edwardian period. He liked parties and living life to the full. He was in the newspapers quite a lot for “inappropriate behaviour” and addressed issues that outraged George V such as addressing the working class in Birmingham and the living conditions of the poor. Edward VIII was very much a modern version of his Grandfather Edward VII whereas George V was practically a male incarnate of Queen Victoria and prefered a more traditional, moral way of life which was fuelled by his pius wife, Queen Mary. Edward VIII was very much like his Grandfather he enjoyed women, disliked the stuffy atmosphere at court and preferred a more lavish lifestyle.
