The temperance movement wanted to end the sale of alcohol and alcoholic beverages. Women liked the movement because the recognized that alcohol often caused economic hardship, and violence in their homes. Saloons, which served alcohol, were places women weren’t admitted, and where men made political decisions without them.

Alcohol was given the blame for severe health problems, destitution, and crime.  Women often promoted temperance because they and their children often suffered the most from the actions of drunken men.  Many did it for safety reasons.
